Humana People to People Will Be Discussing the Future of Teaching at the Reimagining Teachers Conference

2024-06-11

Humana People to People (HUMANA) will participate at the Reimagining Teachers and Teacher Education for Our Futures Conference, 17th to 20th of June 2024 in Helsinki, Finland. This important event, organized and hosted by the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki, alongside the UNITWIN UNESCO network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity, will bring together a diverse array of stakeholders committed to shaping the future of education.

With a focus on addressing the learning crisis and pressing challenges outlined by the United Nations Transforming Education Summit of 2022, the conference will explore the future of the teaching profession and teachers’ work worldwide. Key themes will include Access, Equality and Equity, and Emergencies and Crises, with an emphasis on fostering inclusive learning environments, promoting diversity within the teaching community, and fortifying resilience among educators during challenging times.

Bringing local perspectives on teaching from Mozambique and India

At HUMANA, we have a firm and long-standing commitment to advancing quality and inclusive education worldwide, with a particular emphasis on training and retaining teachers in rural areas. On this occasion, two of our members, ADPP Mozambique and Humana People to People India will be showcasing some good practices of their teacher training programmes at the conference.

Additionally, Hafsah Muhammad, together with Jamk Univeristy of Applied Science, will present findings from the TEPATE project, an inter-university collaboration focused on improving the theory-practice balance of teacher pedagogies in Mozambique.

From Humana People to People India, Abhishek Kumar and Dr. Anudeep Lehal will present insights and lessons learned of our teacher training programmes across India.  Abhishek Kumar will share the best practices of a student-driven methodology for implementing pre-service Teachers' Professional Development Programs, and Dr. Anudeep Lehal will present a research paper on how teacher engagement programs can improve the learning levels of students in government primary schools. This presentation will draw from extensive data collected from schools, teachers, and students across India.

HUMANA’S impact and approach on teacher training

Since the opening of HUMANA’S first teacher training college in Maputo, Mozambique, in 1993, our primary goal has been to contribute towards reducing the teacher gap in rural areas, particularly in primary education. Today, HUMANA’s teacher training programme is comprised of 55 colleges across Mozambique, Angola, Malawi, Guinea Bissau, Zambia, DR Congo and India with more than 64,000 teachers graduates to date.

We offer comprehensive one to four-year programs designed to prepare aspiring educators for primary school teaching roles, particularly in rural contexts. These programs aim to cultivate capable, passionate, and dedicated teachers committed to delivering transformative education. Our goal is to ensure that every child receives quality learning opportunities, and to equip communities with the skills, values, and attitudes necessary for sustainable development. In addition to formal instruction, trainee teachers receive holistic training encompassing diverse areas such as science, horticulture, healthcare, and environmental initiatives. This empowers them to extend their impact beyond the classroom through community-based micro projects.

As we prepare to engage with stakeholders at the conference, Humana People to People reaffirm its commitment to advancing inclusive education and supporting teachers as catalysts for positive change in their communities.
