ADPP Mozambique, a founding member of Humana People to People, commissioned a study on the second-hand clothing industry in Mozambique. The study shows that the SHC trade is an essential supply chain connecting developed and developing countries and a valuable clothing consumption alternative.
The study reveals that 85% of the Mozambican population buys second-hand clothing, making Mozambique the second largest importer of second-hand clothes in the SADC region after Tanzania. The trade in second-hand clothes ensures jobs for over 200,000 people, sustains more than 1 million livelihoods, and generates millions of dollars in taxes for Mozambique.
The launch of the report was titled The Second-Hand Clothing Industry in Mozambique: An Alternative to Survival for Millions of People and a Catalyst for Economic Growth, and featured the reflection of several panellists on the sector, highlighting the thoughts of Dr. Luísa Diogo, who reiterated the need for balancing the second-hand clothing trade and the revitalisation of the local textile industry.
